I just moved into a new house with my family, and I wanted our living room designed to perfection - a place where we could spend some quality time! Functional yet stylishly put together, the vibe I was going for was the classic ‘old meets new.’ Yellow, Blue, and Gold are some of our favorite colors, so I wanted this to shine through.

Lauren, our resident designer, resides in Los Angeles, California. She has a keen eye for detail and loves to design functional spaces high on style. She loves a good hack and has a ton of design tips and DIY ideas always ready to offer as solutions.
Design Brief
This is my first ‘decorating venture,’ and my living room had to check two main things on the list: function and style. It’s the common area of sorts, where we spend some time together as a family or have friends over for a fun gathering. My heart was set on the ‘old meets new’ look with ornate details and classic finishes. However, I wasn’t against experimenting with different decor styles, textures, and design elements - it just had to come together cohesively! Deciding on the color palette for the room was easy - I (read we) love Blues, Yellows, Gold, and of course, Black & White remains an all-time favorite. Pops of color across the space was something I wanted to incorporate.
Watching Design Experts at Work
Lauren was hands-on from day one. Her layout of the living room was spot on, and she immediately started looking for the products that I would love. It was exciting to see my vision come to life. Lauren took into account all the details from my inspiration board on Pinterest and found the perfect pieces to decorate the room. The open floor design plan was excellent. I absolutely loved the throw pillows and pillow covers from Wayfair - they were exactly in the color combination I was looking for. And the Armchair from Joss and Main was a nice contrast to the White Sofa from Living Spaces. The indoor plants gave a nice touch, and the subtle gold accents were smart additions. The best part though, was how she incorporated the black and white images of us as a family on the wall. This made the room extra special for me.
Designer Notes
I’ve added pops of color to create a more unified look within the space and more traditional pieces have been used. Furniture pieces are lighter and brighter creating a more airy feeling within your living room. A different approach to seating was considered, through adding accent chairs and sofas to ensure you have enough seating when you are entertaining in this common area. Your vision of a photo gallery in this concept has been incorporated above the sofa.
Using the Spacejoy App to Experience my Designs in 3D
This was honestly the best part of my Spacejoy experience! After exchanging our initial notes and the references, Lauren uploaded two design concepts on the 3D App, to choose from, and since it was in 3D, it gave me great perspective. The interactive nature of the App is great. It allows one to actually look and ‘feel’ the design before proceeding, and as a first time ‘home designer,’ it helped me make an informed decision.

Designing online was a first for me, and the fact that it was my new house made it extra special. Collaborating with Spacejoy gave me the freedom to express my design sensibilities and offered expert guidance in helping me achieve the design that I exactly wanted.
