One Real Before and After
A customer's photo, then the room our designer planned.

How to Decorate an Open Living and Dining Room
Define the zones first
Decide where living and dining go, and keep a clear walkway of about 36 inches between them.
Choose the anchor pieces
Use the back of the sofa or a console to mark the edge of the living area, and center the dining table under its light.
Light each zone
Hang a pendant over the table, and give the living area its own lamps so each zone can be lit on its own.
Use rugs to separate zones
Give each zone its own rug, sized to its furniture, in colors or patterns that relate to each other.
Finish with a shared palette
Repeat two or three colors and materials across both zones so the room reads as one space.
Open Living and Dining Room Questions
How do I separate an open living and dining room?
Use rugs, lighting and furniture placement rather than walls: a rug and lamps for the living area, a pendant over the table and a sofa or console as a soft divider.
What size rugs for an open living and dining room?
Size each rug to its zone: front legs of the seating on the living rug, and about 24 inches past the table on every side for the dining rug.
How much does it cost to furnish a open living and dining room?
It depends on the size of the room, how many pieces you need, what you're keeping and the quality of materials. Set a budget before you shop and spend most of it on the pieces you use every day. With Spacejoy, you share your budget and your designer plans the open living and dining room within it.
Can a designer design my open living and dining room online?
Yes. You share photos and measurements of your open living and dining room and your style, and a Spacejoy designer plans around them. You get 3D designs of your room and a shoppable list. Packages are priced per room.
